Reliable DOP Testing Services across British Columbia

All HEPA filtered equipment must be tested according to WorkSafeBC’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.

(WSBC OSHR section 6.19) All HEPA filters must be validated to ensure that the filters are removing a sufficient amount of contaminants.

Section 6,19 (1) of the WorkSafe BC Regulation requires the employer to assess the effectiveness of HEPA filters by DOP (Dioctyl Phthalate) testing or similar means at least as follows:

  • Annually
  • After a HEPA filter is replaced in a vacuum  or ventilation system
  • Before use in a high risk asbestos abatement

Before use in high risk work asbestos abatements:

The following guidance helps determine when DOP (or equivalent) testing should be performed prior to high-risk work activities.

To ensure maximum effectiveness, DOP testing must be conducted after the unit has been installed on-site and immediately before use in any high-risk environment (i.e., just prior to operating the equipment at each worksite).

If equipment remains in a high-risk area for more than 30 days, it must be re-tested to maintain the highest level of safety and performance.

DOP Testing:
A method that uses a dispersed aerosol to verify the integrity and performance of HEPA filters.

HEPA Filter:
HEPA filters are typically composed of randomly arranged fiberglass fibers. To meet HEPA standards, a filter must remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles measuring 0.3 micrometers in diameter.

Contaminants:
Examples include asbestos, lead, crystalline silica, mold, and other hazardous airborne particles.
